Janaan Hashim

Janaan Hashim started her legal career as an Illinois Assistant Appellate Defender before entering private practice with Amal Law Group, the first firm in the U.S. founded by six Muslim women of which Janaan was a co-founder.  Janaan primarily practices in civil rights matters focusing on ADA, ADEA, Title VII, and Sections 1981 and 1983 matters as well as post-conviction relief.  In 2021, the judges of the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois presented Janaan with an Award for Excellence in Pro Bono Service.  Janaan currently sits on the editorial board of the ISBA’s flagship publication Illinois Bar Journal and is a member of the ISBA’s Federal Civil Practice Section where she served as its CLE coordinator for the 2021-22 bar year.  Janaan was selected as a GPSolo Diversity Fellow for the American Bar Association’s 2020-2021 bar year. 

Janaan has served as an adjunct professor at Loyola University, American Islamic College, and McCormick Theological Seminary. Janaan was a founding board member of CAIR-Chicago, and served as a board member of Sound Vision Foundation, trustee of the Parliament of the World’s Religions, producer and weekly host of Radio Islam WCEV-1450AM, spokesperson for the CIOGC, and served as the first high school journalism teacher at Universal School earning it two national recognitions.  Janaan graduated cum laude from DePaul University College of Law.
